Get ready, midnight is approaching – advice from UOKiK and… a Trade Inspection report
  • Here are some tips on what to keep in mind when preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
  • Outfit, hairdresser, make-up, party, trip – read service providers’ offers, check the terms and conditions, clearly communicate your expectations. If a service is not in line with the offer, you have the right to make a complaint.
  • If you decide to use fireworks, use them according to the instructions, and only in permitted places and at permitted times. Ensure your own safety and the safety of children, elderly people and animals, and clean up after yourself.

The recipe for a successful New Year’s Eve? There is no universal one: for some, it is a big night out, for others – a quiet evening in the comfort of home. In all circumstances, it is worth taking care of a few details that can save disappointment, stress… and money.

When preparations get into full swing…

Before a dress or suit goes to the dry cleaner, your hair under the scissors, and your face under the make-up artist’s brushes, arrange everything with the service provider. When placing your order, clearly define your expectations so that both parties have the same point of reference. What needs to be done, at what price and by what time – the clearer you are, the smaller the risk that unpleasant surprises will appear at the last minute.

If, despite the arrangements, something went wrong and the final outcome is not in accordance with the agreement, you have the right to make a complaint. This applies both to services, such as make-up or hairstyling, and to events – balls, concerts, and trips.

Tickets, terms and conditions, and expectations – before you set off

Before the event, check its terms and conditions and scope – a refund for purchased tickets may be impossible or subject to specific rules. Get to know them earlier, before you arrive at the event. Remember that the cloakroom is responsible for items left there – contrary to the content of common notices.

Are you renting a hall, room or cottage? Make sure you can celebrate as planned. Check whether the price also includes cleaning, deposit, and heating costs. It is worth documenting the condition of the place when moving in     and before moving out – with photos or a video recording. This is a simple way to avoid misunderstandings.

App-based services – food delivery, passenger transport

Are you ordering services through an app? Check the delivery time and price in advance – all elements, including any service fee, should be clear from the start. Remember that some apps may use dynamic pricing, which means that you may pay more than usual for the same route when returning from a party. The rules should be clearly stated.

And if fireworks are involved…

If you decide to use pyrotechnic products, make sure that the casing is intact and the fuse is secured before purchasing them. Also, read the latest report from the Trade Inspection. Use fireworks according to the instructions, and only in permitted places and at permitted times. Ensure your own safety and the safety of children, elderly people and animals. Do not forget to clean up after yourself.

Regardless of how you spend New Year’s Eve, make sure it is safe, enjoyable, and in line with your expectations. Happy New Year – from UOKiK!
